Scene in Easton: Pre-Thanksgiving Day Game Bonfire at EAHS

Several thousand Red Rover supporters gathered at Easton Area High School Wednesday night for the annual pre-Thanksgiving Day game bonfire to cheer on their team before they play the Phillipburg Stateliners at Fisher Stadium on Thursday.

The handiwork of nearly 550 EAHS seniors, a 35-foot tall pile of wood, duly guarded overnight on Tuesday, was set ablaze by members of the Class of 2013 at about 6:30 p.m. to cheers from the crowd and music provided by the EAHS Marching Band.

The bonfire, topped by a effigy of the Stateliners mascot and the words "Beat P'burg", quickly became a bright inferno, to the delight of the crowd.

The blaze also quickly became quite hot, pushing the crowd back for a time and drawing various reactions to the huge bonfire.

"Oh my God, it's hotter than the sun," was one reaction heard from one young woman in the crowd. "It's so bright, I can't even look at it."

"Okay, time to back up now," said another.

"I was freezing and now I'm sweating," said someone else. "That is sooo hot."

The size of the bonfire impressed more than just the students, as one senior adult member of the crowd was heard to comment, "This is the best bonfire I can remember."
