Baskets at the Ready? Egg Hunts Begin This Weekend

The reasons that spring and Easter are associated with a bunny and eggs are ancient, but the thrill  kids get with hunting for and finding the eggs that crazy hare lays, chocolate or otherwise, are timeless.

And, once again, various groups in the City of Easton and the surrounding municipalities will be hosting egg hunts in the days leading up to Easter Sunday. The festivities are free, unless otherwise noted.

Baskets at the ready? Get set, go!

In Forks Township:
Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m. Egg hunt and baby parade, open to all children up to 10 years of age. Prizes will be awarded in each age group. Bring baskets or bags to collect the eggs and treats. Sponsored by The Kiwanis Club of Forks Township and Forks Township Parks and Recreation, a $2 donation is requested per child, to be used towards programs for needy children in the community. Friday, April 18, at 10 a.m. Best to arrive early, as the hunt begins promptly and the immense popularity of this event means traffic and parking can result in occasional delays. Prizes will be awarded by age group, plus a grand prize egg will be awarded as well. Free candy for participants will be distributed after the hunt too. Easton, Area Municipalities Declare Snow Emergencies Ahead of Coming Storm

Update, Monday, March 3: All municipalities listed below have lifted declared snow emergencies due to the predicted storm failing to materialize.  Those parked in the City of Easton parking deck on South Third Street should move their vehicles as soon as possible to avoid incurring the regular parking fee.

Snow emergencies have been declared in the City of Easton and several surrounding municipalities ahead of yet another winter storm, which is likely to begin late Sunday afternoon and run through Monday. The National Weather Service predicted Saturday evening the latest storm will leave behind between 4 and 8 inches of snow.

In Easton, the snow emergency will run from 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 2 through 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4. Easton residents that live along snow emergency routes will be allowed to park for free in the city's parking deck on South Third Street beginning at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Cars must be moved by 6 p.m. on Tuesday to avoid incurring fees.

Additionally, the city also issued a reminder that sidewalks need to be cleared within eight hours of the end of the snowfall and is also asking that residents dig out fire hydrants that may be located near their properties.

In Wilson Borough, a snow emergency will be in effect from 4 p.m. Sunday, March 2. The ban on parking along snow emergency routes will be in effect until further notice, the borough says.

In Palmer Township, residents are prohibited from parking along snow emergency routes beginning at 11 p.m. Sunday evening. The emergency declaration is set to last until noon on Tuesday. The township also expects trash and recycling pickups to be delayed by a day throughout the week as a result of the new snowfall.

In Tatamy Borough, parking will be prohibited along snow emergency routes beginning at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The parking ban is to last until further notice.

In the borough of West Easton, parking will be prohibited along snow emergency routes beginning at 9 p.m. on Sunday and lasts until further notice.

In Stockertown borough, there is a snow emergency that runs from 3 p.m. Sunday through noon on Wednesday, March 5.

While most people don't seem enthused about having to clean up after what is at least the seventh significant snowfall of the winter, at least one neighborhood establishment has announced it will be holding a "snow party" for locals.

Pokeno will be the order of the day on Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. at La Pazza Bar, 1251 Ferry St., and a "snow jam" dance party begins at 7 p.m.

"Come shake some flakes," bar co-owner Althea Ruffin invited on her Twitter feed Friday afternoon.

Snow Emergencies Declared in Easton Area Prior to Storm

Snow emergencies have been declared in the City of Easton, along with several surrounding municipalities, in anticipation of significant snowfall expected to begin late Wednesday evening.

In the City of Easton, vehicles must be removed from snow emergency routes beginning at 10 p.m. Wednesday. The parking ban is scheduled to end at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 14.

Residents living along snow emergency routes may park in the city's parking deck on South Third St. free of charge, beginning at 5 p.m. today. Vehicles must be removed by 5 p.m. on Friday to avoid paying a parking fee.

Additionally, garbage and recycling pick up in the city is expected to be delayed by at least one day due to the storm, city officials have announced.

In Wilson Borough, a snow emergency has been declared beginning at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The ban on street parking along designated routes is scheduled to last until Friday, February 14 at 2 p.m.

In West Easton, a snow emergency also starts at 8 p.m. and is set to last until 5 p.m. on Friday, February 14.

In Stockertown, the snow emergency will begin at 5 p.m. today and is set to last until noon on Saturday, February 15.

In Tatamy, snow emergency rules go into effect at 9 p.m. tonight. The ban on street parking on designated routes in the borough will last until streets are clear and town official lift it.

There will be a snow emergency in Williams Township starting at 9 p.m. this evening to last until 3:30 p.m. Friday, February 14.

Forks Township has declared a snow emergency to run from 10 p.m. tonight through 5 p.m. Friday, February 14.

Palmer Township has declared a snow emergency and issued a disaster emergency to begin at 6 a.m. on Thursday, February 13, lasting through 8 p.m. on Friday, February 14.

Additionally, LANTA bus service has been suspended for the entire day of Thursday, February 13.

Snow Emergencies Declared in Easton Area

In anticipation of a significant snowfall headed for the Easton area, the City of Easton and Wilson Borough have announced that snow emergency rules will be in effect beginning this evening.

In the City of Easton, the snow emergency will run from 5 p.m. today, January 2 through 5 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, January 3.

In Wilson Borough, a snow emergency is set to begin at 6 p.m. today, January 2 through 3 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, January 3.

Vehicles parked along snow emergency routes must be moved and may not return until the emergency is lifted.  

Residents living along snow emergency routes in the City of Easton may park in the municipal parking garage on South Third Street free of charge beginning at 5 p.m. today. Those who take advantage of the free parking are required to have their vehicles out of the garage by 6 p.m. on Friday, January 3 or face parking charges.

Additionally, Palmer Township has reportedly declared a snow emergency to run until 5 p.m. tomorrow, January 3.

In Williams Township, a snow emergency was declared beginning at 5 p.m. Township officials have not said when the designation is set to be lifted.

In West Easton, a snow emergency declaration is set to run until 3 p.m. tomorrow, January 3.

Focus Group Participants Sought to Discuss Local Flooding Issues

Do you live in or very near a flood plain in the Easton area? Do you rely on flood warnings and alerts to know when to prepare?

Two focus groups to discuss flooding issues will be held at the Nurture Nature Center in Downtown Easton next Monday, June 10 at 2 and 6 p.m., in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration about the use of the National Weather Service's flood forecast and warning tools.

Participants, who will be asked to answer questions and provide input, must meet the above criteria, and also be 18 or older. Fifteen people are needed for each two hour session, and those that participate will each receive $30 for their time.

Coffee and light refreshments will be provided during the sessions.

The Nurture Nature Center is located at 518 Northampton St.

Spring Brings Rummage Sale Bargains

Along with the blooming of flowers, every year spring brings the season of amazing  bargains in the form of rummage sales.

Not only an opportunity to pick up some unique, or just necessary, items for a pittance, these annual charity sales also help support a number of worthy local causes, including community outreach programs, children's athletic leagues, and youth groups, to name a few.

And, by choosing gently-used items over new, you'll also be doing the planet a favor. For a lot of rummage sale offerings, like books, DVDs, and durable goods, it really does make a lot of sense, as well as good "cents". Many of the goods are actually new items, too, as donors often gift church sales with unwanted gifts and things they bought but then never used.

Rummage sales are also a lot of fun, as one never knows what one may find, from antique and vintage items to an eclectic mix of clothes (including great bargains on kids' items) to just plain useful stuff, like toys, tools, books, and more. Home baked goodies and lunch are also often available.

It's never too late to pop in on an open rummage sale either. The last day or hours are often when bag sales are held. For anywhere from a dollar to $3 or so, you can usually fill a grocery bag full of whatever you fancy, completely guilt free, since it not only goes to a good cause but is probably the least you'll ever pay to go shopping. And, due to the chaotic nature of these sales, some of the best stuff is still on offer at the end, having been missed by the crowd of early birds

MetEd Declares Power Restoration Complete

Utility company MetEd declared Tuesday that their restoration of power to those whose electricity was knocked out by Hurricane Sandy is now complete, but some in Easton and the greater Easton area are still sitting in the dark.

"Met-Ed has restored service to nearly all of its more than 270,000 customers affected by the storm," read a Tuesday afternoon press release detailing the company's efforts over the past week.

While that is a vast improvement over the original number of local customers left without power, for those that remain without, it's likely to be little comfort on a night where temperatures are predicted to fall below freezing after more than a week with no electricity.

At about 6 p.m. on Tuesday evening, eight days after the superstorm struck, there were still 224 locations in the City of Easton without service, mostly in College Hill. In Palmer Township, the number without power sat at 241.

Other municipalities were faring better and showing signs that their power outages may actually be ended for all within 24 hours, with 20 in Wilson Borough, 17 locations in Williams and 22 Forks Townships without service.

The company has said the remainder of those without power should be restored by the end of Wednesday, Nov. 7.

"In many respects, Sandy was a much more damaging storm than Irene or the 2011 October snowstorm. As an example, during this past week our crews replaced more than twice as many poles, cross arms, and transformers as we did following Irene. Sandy was a historic storm for Met-Ed and its customers," said Mike Doran, Met-Ed regional president, via the media release.

Real-time information provided by MetEd showed that power was back on for all in West Easton and Glendon boroughs.

"Our crews worked as quickly and safely as possible through our restoration plan to return service to our customers," Doran said."Most importantly, we completed that work safely. I can't thank our customers enough for their patience as we worked to recover from this historic storm; we are well aware of the inconvenience a power outage causes."

Those still without power should call 1-888-544-4877 to make sure the company is aware their location is still dark.

Wednesday update: By early afternoon, all townships were mostly restored to service, with only sporadic outages in the low double digits. In the City of Easton, 104 customer locations were without power.

Monday, October 29

Here's what's cancelled:
All schools in the Easton Area School District, Wilson Area School District, are closed today, along with Notre Dame High School and St. Jane Frances de Chantal School. Additionally, EASD offices are closed.

LANTA bus service has been suspended for today. Additionally, all scheduled  Transbridge Lines, Susquehanna Trailways and most Greyhound runs are also cancelled.

The Family YMCA has announced all of its facilities will be closed today, including Pre-K Counts, ECDC and SACC.

Third Street Alliance and Learning Center is closed and all programs cancelled today, with the exception of AA meetings.

St. Andrew's Nursery School, Little People Country Club and Palmer Moravian Academy in Palmer Township are closed.

All classes at the School of Rock Music in Easton are cancelled for Monday, with the possibility of Tuesday cancellations as well.

All classes and activities at Northampton County Community College are cancelled.

Lafayette College is closed and classes are cancelled, though essential employees should report to work.

College Hill Nursery School is closed.

Charles Chrin Community Center of Palmer Township is closed.

The Career Institute of Technology is closed, and there are no evening classes.

The Lehigh Valley Charter School for the Performing Arts is closed, and the evening open house is to be rescheduled.

All Northampton County senior centers are closed, including the Easton Area Senior Center and the South Side Senior Center.

The Penn State Lehigh Valley campus is closed today and Tuesday.

The Easton Public Library (all branches) is closed as of noon.

The Northampton County Courthouse and government offices closes at 2 p.m. today.

Williams Township municipal offices closed at 11:30 a.m. today.

West Easton Borough offices appear to be closed.

The Palmer Park Mall is closed.

Lafayette Ambassador Bank locations closed at noon today. They intend to reopen at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

AAA of Northampton County closed at 1 p.m.

Second and third shifts in the manufacturing department of Crayola LLC are cancelled.

Miller-Keystone Blood Center offices closed at 4 p.m. today and plans to reopen at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

Redi-Care Medical Center on 25th Street is closed as of 5 p.m.

Wegman's stores in the Lehigh Valley will close at 7 p.m. tonight, plan to reopen at 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

Tuesday, October 30

The City of Easton continues to be in a declared state of emergency until midnight tonight. A 9 p.m. curfew is in effect. Two daytime shelters in the city and a county shelter in Bethlehem, which is open 24/7, are available to those in need.

All schools in the Easton Area and Wilson Area school districts are closed today. St. Jane Frances de Chantal School is also again closed. Additionally, Notre Dame High School is closed.

The Penn State Lehigh Valley campus is closed.

The Northampton County Courthouse, county Court of Common Pleas and government offices are closed today, scheduled to re-open at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 31.

Lafayette College is closed and classes are cancelled, though essential employees should report to work.

College Hill Nursery School is closed.

Crayola LLC corporate offices are closed and first shift in the manufacturing division is cancelled.

All Northampton County senior centers are closed, including the Easton Area Senior Center and the South Side Senior Center.

The Lehigh Valley Charter School for the Performing Arts is closed.

LANTA bus service is cancelled for today, though the transportation authority says some service may be restored, depending on conditions, in the evening. Service will resume with as normal a schedule as possible on Wednesday.

Meals on Wheels for Northampton County will not deliver meals on Tuesday and instructs recipients to use their "blizzard boxes".
