Safe Harbor Annual Regatta: Noon to 2 p.m. More than 1,000 toy boats are expected to race down the Bushkill Creek in this annual fundraiser for Easton's Safe Harbor homeless shelter. Also includes pony rides, a K9 demonstration, a tricky tray, and other fun activities. Boats can be purchased for $5 apiece, and prizes will be awarded to those whose boats place in the race. Live in the Square Performer Has Released New CD

 This week's "Live in the Square" concert series performer, David Leonhardt, is not only a longtime Easton resident, but a prolific, internationally known jazz performer. And, he has just put out a new CD.

Leonhardt will be performing an outdoor concert on Friday, June 28, from  7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on  Easton's Centre Square. He will be performing with his trio including piano, bass, and drums and playing songs from "Sounds Of Silence" as well as original compositions.

The free concert is part of the Easton Main Street Initiative Summer Concert Series.

"Sounds Of Silence" features  jazz versions of pop hits like "Blackbird" by the Beatles, "Hound Dog" by Elvis, "So Far Away" by Carole King, "Sounds Of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel, and other songs familiar to Boomers and Millennials that aren’t often performed by jazz artists.

The familiar selections done in a new way give the recording an appeal that will please a wider audience than just fans of traditional jazz.

Leonhardt's new CD, his 24th publicly released full-length recording, as well as other selections, will be available to buy at the concert.

Leonhardt's recordings are also available through the artist's website and at CDBaby, as well as available for purchase digitally for download through iTunes.

Hot Bijouxx Releases First Full-Length Recording

The Easton-based band Hot Bijouxx officially released its first full-length recording, "I've Found a New Baby", just over two weeks ago at Philadelphia's L'Etage on April 28, and the band is celebrating again on Friday with an all-ages CD release party at Allentown's Miller Symphony Hall tomorrow evening, Friday, May 17.

The CD includes eight tracks, and while none are written by the band, Hot Bijouxx has put their unique signature sound, which they describe as "hot French accordian aggressive musette post-ironic djingo django hot swing gypsy jazz" on each of the diverse selection of tunes, which ranges from Lady Gaga to classic blues.

The group began recording their first CD about a year ago, says singer Kristen Jasionowski, and the process was not only exciting, but helped the four musicians grow as a group as well.

"It's helped us define ourselves," she said, adding that the collection on the CD is "kind of a musical conversation between different genres."

Along with Jasionowski, Dallas Vietty on accordion, guitarist Ryan McNeely, and drummer Kevin Ripley comprise the band.

Hot Bijouxx has recently played a number of gigs in Easton and Bethlehem night spots, as well as in Bucks County, but as the group's fan base grows, so have the scope of their gigs.

After the Friday night gig, the group is scheduled to play on Friday, July 26 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Easton Main Street's "Live in the Square" concert series, at MusikFest on Saturday, August 10 at 8 p.m. at the Steelstacks venue, and on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Easton's Riverside Festival of the Arts at 4 p.m.

Another date in Easton is yet to be confirmed, Jasionowski said, but is likely to happen in June.



Until the group finalizes CD licensing and distribution issues, their new release is only available at shows, though Hot Bijouxx hopes to be able to allow their fans, which span from young hipsters to seasoned adults, to order music online soon.

Of the immediately upcoming performance, Jasionowski says,"This is a good opportunity to see live music in a non-bar setting. There was interest in student pricing so there are $10 tickets available that will be held at will-call so they can show student ID."

Friday Concerts Return to Downtown Easton, Beginning Tomorrow

Three series of concerts in the City of Easton's Downtown, all happening on Fridays, will happen again this year, beginning tomorrow.

 

For the second year, Easton Main Street will be hosting "Tunes at Noon", a lunch-hour weekly Friday concert series in Centre Square that runs through May and June.

 

In its fifth year, "Live in the Square", is held in the same location and features concerts at 7:30 p.m. on the last Friday of each month, from now until September.

 

"Live at Riverside", is at the Riverside Park amphitheatre for the third year, and takes place on the last Friday of each month at 7:30 p.m. through the end of September as well. Featuring bleacher seating and great views of the Delaware River, concert goers can enjoy beer, wine and light dinner fare at Porters’ Riverside Pub Tent throughout the evening.

 

All concerts are free and open to the public.
