Easton Area Spring Rummage Sale List 2014

Whether you love a bargain or need one, rummage sales are a great place to find both everyday and unusual treasures for a song. Additionally, rummage sales help keep perfectly good but unwanted and unneeded items out of the landfill and the proceeds help support a number of local community programs sponsored by local houses of worship, from Little League to food pantries to literacy initiatives.

In other words, rummage sales are a win for everyone. Get gently-worn items for the kids, practically new clothes and other items for yourself and your home, or find some amazing vintage and antique oddities, usually at spare-change prices or for literally a couple of bucks for a bagful.

But being in the know is the key to finding the best sales. Run by volunteers, there is no central place rummage sales are advertised--much like the events themselves, announcements are a bit haphazard, and finding them is often a matter of luck.

This is why The Easton Eccentric publishes two rummage sale lists annually--one each spring, and the other in the fall. And, we're pretty sure both rummage aficionados and newbies alike appreciate the effort, as past lists are some of our most trafficked posts over time. So pass on the link to this list your friends, and bookmark it for yourself, and check back weekly. We'll be adding more sales and information as it becomes available.

Boys & Girls Club Seeks Donations for Food Drive

The Boys & Girls Club of Easton has announced it's holding a Thanksgiving food drive to benefit local families in need during the holiday season. Canned vegetables, boxed or canned potatoes, boxed or bagged stuffing, yams, cranberry sauce, drinks, and other non-perishable foods, along with new hats and gloves are all on the list of items being sought.

Members of the public who wish to contribute can drop off items at the club, located at  210 Jones-Houston Way, or at the Easton Teen Center, 1101 Northampton St., between 1 and 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and on Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Donated food will be given to a local food bank in the Easton area to help families prepare for a holiday meal. The hats & gloves collected will be distributed to members of the Boys & Girls Club of Easton and their families.

The drive is being run by the Future Stars Torch Club, which is comprised of 11- to 13-year-old members of the Boys and Girls Club of Easton.

'Simply Savory' Raised More Than $35K for ProJeCt of Easton

More than $35,000 was raised for local programs and services at Simply Savory, ProJeCt of Easton's premier annual fund raising event held earlier this month on October 7 at the Hampton Inn.

"We couldn’t be more pleased with the outpouring of support from the local community
including our culinary participants, sponsors, donors, guests and volunteers," said  ProJeCt Executive Director Janice Komisor. "“The funds raised go toward our mission to help people help themselves with services that include emergency shelter, food pantry and literacy programs."

ProJeCt local services include an emergency assistance and food program, case management support to assist people in developing life skills to help them move to self-sufficiency, and educational programs that include adult basic literacy, English as a second language, GED preparation, family literacy and supplemental education programs for school-age children. The agency provides assistance to more than 5,000 people a year, serving Easton and the surrounding communities in Northampton County.

Annual Regatta to Benefit Safe Harbor

More than 1,000 toy boats are expected to race down the Bushkill Creek on Saturday, September 28 in an annual regatta race event that will benefit Easton's Safe Harbor.

The fundraising event will also include pony rides, a K9 demonstration, a tricky tray, and other fun activities from noon to 2 p.m. at Penns Pump Park in Palmer Township. Boats can be purchased for $5 apiece, and prizes will be awarded to those whose boats place in the race. The park is located just off Northwood Avenue and Bushkill Drive in Palmer Township.

Money raised at the regatta will go to the homeless shelter's day program, which needs to replace the $54,000 in funding formerly provided by the county. The day program provides a hot and nutritious breakfast and lunch to 80 to 100 participants daily, as well as case management, referrals to local agencies, and other programs and activities.

Safe Harbor is also seeking other donations of both funds and goods to support its efforts--linens, house wares, toiletries, paper goods, and clothing, are always needed, and the organization has a wish list posted on its website that specifies what it needs most at any given moment.

Simply Savory to Benefit ProJeCt While Offering a Taste of Fine Area Restaurants

If you need a solid excuse to go out and have a good time on a Monday evening, supporting a worthy local cause is probably one of the best.

ProJeCt of Easton’s signature fundraising event, Simply Savory, will be held Monday, October 7 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Hampton Inn in on Route 248 in Lower Nazareth, and reservations are now being taken for the delicious evening.

ProJeCt is a community benefit human service agency founded by local clergy and community leaders in the wake of the Martin Luther King Jr. assassination and in response to the rising tide of poverty and social unrest of 1968. Its purpose was to advocate for action and to provide service to an under- served poor population in Easton.

Today the agency provides assistance to more than 5,000 people a year, both in Easton and the surrounding communities in Northampton County.

Services include an emergency assistance and food program, case management support services that assist people in developing life skills and moving to self-sufficiency, and educational programs that include adult basic literacy, English as a second language, GED preparation, family literacy and supplemental education programs for school age children.

Motorcycle Rally to Honor Fallen Heroes

Hundreds of motorcyclists are expected to participate in a rally, "Fallen Heroes Run", set for Saturday, September 21 to honor two police officers who died on duty, it was announced Wednesday.

Easton pub Drinky's, which is holding the Downtown Skate Jam next weekend, will also be sponsoring this more somber event to remember the lives of Joe Wargo and Brad Fox, along with Brassknuckle Automotive and Cycles of Palmer Township.

Tommy Urglavitch, Drinky's manager, said the day will begin on Larry Holmes Drive with a ride that will be escorted by Easton Police. The ride concludes in Centre Square, and a buffet and party to celebrate the lives of the two officer will be held at Drinky's.

Riders can take part for $10, while passengers are $5. Admission to the buffet after the ride is $5, with a cash bar. Registration runs from 10 to 11:45 a.m., and the ride begins at 12:15 p.m.

In case of rain, the event will be postponed and held on Sunday, September 22, organizers said.

Wargo was a Mount Arlington, NJ patrolman who lived in Phillipsburg, NJ. He was killed in October of 2011 when a drunk driver smashed into his marked police car.

Fox, who was a Plymouth Township police officer in Montgomery County, was shot and killed in the line of duty by a car thief in September of 2012.

Both men were known for their charity, raising money for Toys for Tots, the Special Olympics, and other causes, Urglavitch said.

"Joe Wargo was my best friend," he added. "We just want to raise awareness that these people put on a badge...and they don't always come home."

Money raised through the Fallen Heroes Run was set be donated to the families of both officers, but the police officers' widows have both chosen to donated the money to two police charities--the Garden State Concerns of Police Survivors and the PA K9 Assistance Program.

Mayor Sal Panto praised the event, and noted it is set to take place on what may be the "busiest weekend of the year". Also scheduled to take place that day is the Riverside Festival of the Arts, the annual Easton Farmers' Market Chili Fest, and Lafayette Day. He added that the organizers of all three events have voiced support for the Fallen Heroes Run.

"Everybody's happy with that," he said, adding, "When you love a loved one like that, you leave behind family. It's really the family that sacrifices."

Sneaker Drive Aims to Cover Many Student "Piggies"

Going back to school may be the furthest thing from most Easton kids' minds right now, but several local organizations are hard at work making sure that when the school bell rings for that first day, area students have the basic necessities.

The "Let's Help Cover those Piggies!" drive is collecting new and like-new sneakers and shoes for the third year in a row, to ensure students have well-fitting footwear for the coming school year.

The initiative, coordinated by First United Church of Christ in cooperation with the Easton  Weed and Seed program, Easton Area School District's "Family Connection", Third Street Alliance, and other local churches and agencies, will provide sneakers to a couple hundred local students who might otherwise not be able to afford them, said First UCC's community outreach coordinator Margaret Parisi.

Those who will receive the sneakers don't necessarily rely on government benefits, she noted, though certainly many are recipients.

"We're really trying to reach the families not just in the social service programs, but also the folks in between," she said.

While the recession is officially over, there are still many in the Easton area who struggle to pay the bills, she said, and the need for the free footwear program has grown since it started.

"There are a growing number of piggies to cover," Parisi said.

While sneakers and shoes are being collected through a number of Easton houses of worship, local residents and businesses are more than welcome to contribute to the effort. The only stipulation is that donated footwear be in very good or new condition. All sizes are needed, from tiny preschool and toddler sizes all the way up to hard-to-find men's size 14.

"The goal is to get school-age children to have nice sneakers," Parisi said. "We make sure we have at least one pair in every size for everyone who is registered (to receive a pair of sneakers)."

Extra sneakers and shoes will go to students' family members, as they're needed, she said.

The church hopes that local businesses will get involved in the effort too, perhaps by local shops collecting gently used sneakers and shoes from customers and maybe offering an incentive like a small discount or free item for those who contribute, Parisi said.

"If people want to ask their job or their employees if they want to collect shoes, that would be great," she said, adding that churches and other houses of worship not yet involved in the footwear drive are also welcome to contribute.

Whether through a business or from private citizens, donations will be accepted through Monday, August 5.

The church specifically asks that donors not leave sneakers and shoes by the door when the church is closed.

"That's our sexton's nightmare," Parisi said.

Donated sneakers and shoes are set be distributed to registered recipients on Saturday, August 17, a little more than a week before the school year starts again.

Neighborhood Center to Hold a Night at the Races

The Easton Area Neighborhood Center (EANC) will hold its most important fundraiser of the year, "A Night at the Races" on Friday, June 7, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Palmer Township Fire Company, located at 950 South 27th St. in Palmer Township.

The event will feature 12 horse races, and attendees will get fake money to bet with, which will also be good towards raffle chances on spa sessions, restaurant gift certificates, sports tickets, and gift baskets.

Dinner and free soda and beer are included in the price of tickets to the event, which is $20 per person in advance, or $25 at the door.

A number of sponsorship opportunities are also available for the event, ranging in price from $100 to $1000. Sponsors will be recognized with free tickets, "horse ownership", program ads, name on the sponsorship board, and in-person thanks and recognition at the event.

People can also "buy" a horse for $25. "Owners" of winning horses will receive $75 in real money.

Ads in the Night at the Races program are also available at the following rates: a full-page ad is $100, a half-page ad is $65, and a quarter-page ad is $35.

The EANC provides a variety of services to low- and moderate-income residents of Northampton County, including rent and utility assistance programs, a food pantry, a shelter for homeless families, a mentoring program for pregnant and parenting teens at Easton Area High School, and a program to help individuals diagnosed with psychiatric conditions manage their finances and live independently in the community.

All proceeds from the Night at the Races fundraiser will go directly to supporting these programs.  Donations are tax deductible.

ProJeCt Benefit Event Is "Simply Savory"

Need an excuse to go out on a Monday night? Want to do something good for the community? Next week, there's a delicious chance to do both.

ProJeCt of Easton will hold its annual fundraiser, Simply Savory 2012, offering guests an exciting and delicious evening of food, wine, and beer tasting from local eateries.

Featuring 20 of the Lehigh Valley’s finest restaurants including Blue, deLorenzo’s Italian Restaurant, Edible Arrangements, Elizabeth Mulrine Culinary Events, Franklin Hill Vineyards, Green Harvest Food Emporium, Leaf, Marianna’s Pizza Café, Miguel’s, The Mint, Pearly Baker’s, Porters’ Pub, Rodale Catering & Events, Sangria, Solemio Italian Grille, Thyme Restaurant & Bar, Valenca, Vintage Restaurant & Bar, Weyerbacher Brewing, and Widow’s Tavern, guests will also enjoy live entertainment provided by the Easton High School Chamber Orchestra, a silent auction, and a raffle for prizes including a $1,000 gift certificate to Beverly Palm Jewelers.

Reservations are $75 and can be purchased in advance or the night of the event, which is to be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Hampton Inn on Route 248, Easton (Lower Nazareth).

All proceeds benefit ProJeCt of Easton, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people help themselves by providing social and education services to residents of Northampton County and beyond.

Last year, ProJeCt provided assistance to more than 5,000 individuals.

Benefit Golf Outings Planned for September

Three upcoming golf events, planned for the coming month, will benefit local deserving causes.

Blue Star Mothers Golf Tournament to Support Military Families

The Second Annual Blue Star Mothers Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, rain or shine.

Registration and lunch will run from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

The event, which begins at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start, is a “Four Man Scramble” and prizes will be awarded for: Men's Longest Drive, Women's Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin, Pot of Gold as well as to First, Second and Third Place winners.

Enjoy a fun day of golfing at beautiful Whitetail Golf Course in Bath, PA and at the same time raise money for our service men and women who are fighting for our freedom. The money raised by this event will go towards the Blue Star Mothers' efforts to support our troops—shipping care packages, providing funds for the families of injured soldiers to travel, assisting veterans in financial crisis, sponsoring Christmas parties for the children of deployed military (complete with Santa and presents) holding welcome home parties for returning troops, and community outreach.

RMG Insurance 6th Annual Ladies Golf and Gourmet to Support State Theatre

The 6th Annual RMG Insurance Ladies Golf & Gourmet will take place on Thursday, Sept.

20 at the Club at Morgan Hill.

The outing benefits the non-profit State Theatre Center for the Arts in Easton, and the FREDDY Awards, which recognizes the achievements of local high school stage productions.

Ladies of all golfing levels are invited to participate. Nine holes of golf are followed by a gourmet dinner presented by Vintage Restaurant and Head Chef, Michael Pichetto.

Chef Pichetto will demonstrate the preparation of some of the many hors’ doeuvres our guests will enjoy. There will also be a mixology class as well as live entertainment. A silent and live auction are also featured.

This low-pressure, women-only event offers an invaluable networking opportunity and typically attracts more than 80 businesswomen from the Lehigh and Delaware Valleys.

Greater Easton Open to Benefit City Neighborhood Groups

The Greater Easton Open (GEO) golf tournament will be held on Friday, Sept. 28, at the Riverview Country Club, beginning at 8 a.m.

To allow golfers of all abilities to compete together in a fun format, the event will be a 4-person scramble event, with a shot-gun start. This means that each 4-person team will hit a shot, the team will go to the best shot result at which point all 4 golfers will hit another shot from there until the ball is in the hole.

The GEO benefits four major neighborhood groups in Easton, and golfers will be entitled to a gift bag as well as a luncheon after the event featuring a hot lunch buffet and BBQ. Beer will also be provided at the luncheon, for which those not golfing but wishing to attend can also buy tickets. Additionally, there will be beverage carts available during play.
