Easton Area Spring Rummage Sale List 2014

Whether you love a bargain or need one, rummage sales are a great place to find both everyday and unusual treasures for a song. Additionally, rummage sales help keep perfectly good but unwanted and unneeded items out of the landfill and the proceeds help support a number of local community programs sponsored by local houses of worship, from Little League to food pantries to literacy initiatives.

In other words, rummage sales are a win for everyone. Get gently-worn items for the kids, practically new clothes and other items for yourself and your home, or find some amazing vintage and antique oddities, usually at spare-change prices or for literally a couple of bucks for a bagful.

But being in the know is the key to finding the best sales. Run by volunteers, there is no central place rummage sales are advertised--much like the events themselves, announcements are a bit haphazard, and finding them is often a matter of luck.

This is why The Easton Eccentric publishes two rummage sale lists annually--one each spring, and the other in the fall. And, we're pretty sure both rummage aficionados and newbies alike appreciate the effort, as past lists are some of our most trafficked posts over time. So pass on the link to this list your friends, and bookmark it for yourself, and check back weekly. We'll be adding more sales and information as it becomes available.

See you at the sales!

New York Man to Be Charged in Eddy G's Murder

Miguel Angel Rodriguez
Photo contributed by
the Easton Police Department
The Easton Police Department has announced that they and the Northampton County District Attorney's office have obtained an arrest warrant for Miguel Angel Rodriguez, 19, who will be charged with criminal homicide for his alleged role in the shooting death of Damien Robinson, which occurred at the former Eddie G's Bar last year, on February 9, 2013.

Rodriguez, allegedly a member of the Very Crispy Gangsters or the VCGs in Brooklyn, was also charged last year, in November 2013, with attempted homicide in connection with the shooting of Eric Edwards, which occurred on December 19, 2011, in the 1300 block of Washington Street.

Rodriguez is currently in the custody of the New York City Department of Corrections and being held on unspecified separate charges that occurred in that city, the EPD added in a media release.

He was arrested by Easton police on February 21, 2013 on charges of drunken driving and drug offenses after a standoff in a home on Glendon Avenue in Easton's South Side neighborhood, and later extradited to New York on charges of attempted homicide related to a gang dispute.

The latest charges homicide in the Eddie G's case are the result of grand jury findings, authorities indicated.

Robinson was shot multiple times in the chest and later died in an area hospital.

No Fooling, Easton Really Wants to Clean Up Streets After a Hard Winter

No fooling, street sweeping will resume in
the City of Easton on April 1, city
officials say.
By Christina Georgiou

The city will resume its regular street sweeping schedule next week on Tuesday, April 1, and city officials say they are serious about enforcing no parking ordinances to get the job done.

"It's no April Fool's joke. After this winter, the streets really need to be swept," said City Administrator Glenn Steckman at Easton's city council meeting Wednesday evening.

The city began leaving bright pink flyers on cars along city street sweeping routes this week to remind residents to move their cars on street sweeping routes during designated times, Mayor Sal Panto said.

"We're trying to be proactive so we don't have to give people tickets," the mayor said.

Steckman said even one car left on the side of a street on a block being swept makes it impossible for the sweeper to do a thorough job.

Litter and debris left behind after numerous
winter storms lines many of Easton's streets,
and city street sweepers can't get to it
with parked cars in the way.
"It only benefits everyone when we can get all of the cars off one side of the street so we can clean it," he said.

Councilwoman El Warner questioned whether not having a grace period and at first issuing warnings to those that forget to move their cars was really a good idea.

"I mean, I can hear it, 'There's still snow on the street they never cleared, and they're ticketing,'" she said.

"We might be able to give one week," Steckman said.

"We weren't going to announce it, but the cat's out of the bag," Panto added.

Additionally, the city has already begun the process of filling potholes on city streets caused by the cold this winter. Panto said the total cost of several severe storms and extremely low temperatures is still being tallied.

"This has been a rough winter," he said, noting that the city spent about $258,000 on snow removal. "We expect another $100,000 in road repairs and filling pot holes."

In many places in the city, a long, cold snowy winter has
left piles of snow along streets that has yet to melt.
A better estimate of the total costs is expected to be complete by the next city council meeting, and when it is, city officials will then discuss any budget issues, the mayor said.

Both the mayor and city administrator said the harsh weather this winter has given the city the opportunity to learn more about how to handle snow emergencies.

"I think there have been a lot of lessons learned this winter," Steckman said.

Panto suggested the city may implement a robo-call system next year to directly inform residents of impending snow emergencies and to remind them to move their cars.

Additionally, the public works department will be looking at the current snow emergency route map and the possibility of making changes, he said.

Easton City Council Welcomes New Planning Director

By Christina Georgiou

George Kinney, Easton's new planning director, told
city council members, "It's great to be back in my home
state of Pennsylvania."
Easton's new planning department director has been on the job for just over a week, but most city council members met Easton's new planning director for the first time Wednesday night.

"It's great to be back in my home state of Pennsylvania," George Kinney told elected city officials.

Kinney, originally from the area, has spent most of his 20-year career as a certified planner out of state, most recently in Florida and in Maryland, though he served for about nine months as Palmer Township's planner in 2008.

Replacing Becky Bradley, who left late last year to head the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission, Kinney was last the director of community development in St. Pete Beach, FL, beginning in April of 2012 where he was hired to work on the city's redevelopment plan, which included the development of local laws to foster affordable housing, public art, and the collection of improvement fees.

Before that, he was a member of the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council, and served for about nine months as the head of planning for Palmer Township in 2008.

He was one of nine candidates the city considered for the job and was chosen by the city administrator with the approval of the mayor, in accordance with the city's Home Rule charter.

Kinney told city council members he will have an open door policy while running Easton's planning department and that he hopes to make progress in the coming weeks and months when it comes to furthering the city's goals.

Easton Firefighters' Professional Achievements Acknowledged

By Christina Georgiou

George Leidy was officially sworn in as an
Easton Fire Department captain Wednesday evening
by Easton Mayor Sal Panto.
The achievements and contributions by two longtime Easton firefighters were recognized by city council at its meeting Wednesday evening.

Sixteen year veteran of the Easton Fire Department George Leidy was officially sworn in as a captain, having recently been promoted from lieutenant.

After his oath was administered by Mayor Sal Panto, Leidy's new badge was pinned onto his uniform by his father-in-law, Robert Lee.

Easton Fire Department Captain George Leidy's new
badge is pinned onto his uniform by his
father-in-law, Robert Lee.
The pinning of the badge was a significant moment, and it is traditional that a newly promoted fire officer choose someone close to him for the honor, explained Easton Fire Chief John Bast.

Leidy, who is nationally certified as a "Fire Officer I & II" and an EMS first responder, has been assigned to the city fire department's third platoon as the city-wide Tour Commander, where his responsibilities will include the management of the working platoon and responding to all incidents while on duty, Bast said.

Also recognized Wednesday night was Deputy Fire Chief John Price, a 31 1/2-year veteran of the department, for being granted the professional designations of "Certified Fire Investigator" (CFI) and "Fire Officer".

Deputy Fire Chief John Price,
a 31 1/2-year veteran of the department, center,
was recognized for gaining the professional
designations of "Certified Fire Investigator" (CFI) and "Fire Officer".
It took "five years of hard work" for Price to become a CFI, one of only 58 in the state, Bast said. The process includes an assessment of education, training and experience, as well as passing a comprehensive exam.

Price is one of only three Fire Officers in Pennsylvania as recognized by the Center for Public Safety Excellence, and the only one in the Lehigh Valley. The designation is awarded after a thorough assessment of the applicant's background and experience, including contributions to the profession and their community involvement.

Mayor Sal Panto, right, and Councilman Jeff Warren, who
heads the city's public safety committee, congratulate
Deputy Fire Chief John Price on his achievements.

Councilman Jeff Warren, who heads the city council public safety committee, credited Bast, as well as the firefighters, for the promotion and professional recognitions, noting that Bast was recognized as a Chief Fire Officer, a title shared by just 21 other fire officials in Pennsylvania, in 2012, and he has since encouraged professional development by members of the department.

"What a terrific job you've done with your leadership and on the example you have set for the department," Warren said, adding, "Thank you too, to the department for the job you do for our community."

Scene in Easton: Celebrating the 193rd Anniversary of Greek Independence

By Christina Georgiou

About 80 people gathered in Centre Square Saturday afternoon to witness the raising of the Greek flag in observance of the upcoming Greek Independence Day, on March 25.

Fr. Constatine Papadopoulos, of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Wilson Borough, led the gathering, along with State Representative Robert Freeman and Easton Mayor Sal Panto.

After a brief prayer in Greek, Papadopoulos spoke about the importance of freedom and liberty.

"Freedom is precious today, and it is the mother of liberty," he said. "It is freedom that allows us to have pride in our souls."

He added, "We also appreciate the founders of America...this great, great nation."

Freeman, after presenting Papadopoulos with a declaration of recognition of the event from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, noted the influence of Greek culture on society as a whole.

"We acknowledge the many contributions of Greek Americans...Greek Americans have made America strong as so many other immigrants have made America strong," he said. "We also acknowledge the many contributions of Greek civilization to the world...The world owes a debt of gratitude to the Greek civilization. The world would not be the same without them."

The group, with many holding Greek flags, then sang the national anthem, followed by the Greek national anthem.

Before assisting parish president John Kariofillis with raising the Greek flag over Centre Square, Panto noted, "This Greek ethnic group in Easton is strong, and I hope it remains strong...We need our ethnic groups to remain strong so we as a country continue to prosper together."

Angelo Karaminas, 5, of Easton, dressed in traditional Greek garb for

For the second year in a row, Easton Hospital surgical residents bested the competition to become the regional champions in "Surgical Jeopardy".

The local hospital's doctors Stanley Ogu and Nils-Tomas McBride took first place honors at the event, which was held earlier this month at Geisinger Henry Hood Center for Health Research in Danville.

The competition included teams from seven hospitals around the region, including teams from Lehigh Valley Health Network and St. Luke's, said Easton Hospital marketing director Stephen Wilson.

Wilson added that the competition, designed to help surgeons prepare for their upcoming board examinations, has become so popular that residency programs in Pennsylvania must apply and be accepted to compete.

Ogu and Dr. Aniket Sakharpe were the champions last year.

The trophy is on display in Easton Hospital in the case near the cafeteria.
