This Week in Easton, November 5 to 8, "Post-Sandy edition"

 This week's edition of "This Week in Easton" also contains some post-Sandy information you may find useful. Please stop by again, as we will be updating this page as more announcements are made.

Monday, November 5


All Easton Area schools are open today; Notre Dame High School is also in session.

In the Wilson Area School District, all schools are open, and power has been restored to Williams Elementary School. Some bus stops have been temporarily relocated during Sandy recovery efforts. The Career Institute of Technology is closed; the office opens at 9 a.m. Evening classes tonight are also cancelled.

College Hill Nursery School is open. Their Halloween parades will be held on Thursday and Friday.

St. Andrew's Nursery School in Palmer Township is open, and the Halloween party is on.

The Williams Township municipal offices will be open. Telephones and Internet are still out of service at the time of publication. In an emergency please dial 911. Those with urgent Township-related concerns may contact Township Manager, Jennifer Smethers via her cell phone at 484-357-8179.

The Northampton County Courthouse, Court of Common Pleas and all county offices are open today.

"Beat P'burg!" Blood Drive: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Miller-Keystone, as well as the American Red Cross are urging people to donate, as their blood supply was severely impacted by "superstorm" Sandy and the cancellations of blood collections it necessitated. Another drive is being held in Phillipsburg, NJ as well. The two schools are in  (friendly) competition to see who can collect more blood on this date. Go Rovers! First Monday at EACC - "Suffragettes": Noon to 1 p.m. Easton re-enactor Melissa Rabinsky will portray a suffragette in period costume and demeanor. Suffragettes were members of the woman’s right-to-vote movements in the late 19th and early 20th century, until the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified in time for women, over the age of 21, to vote in the 1920 presidential election. AARP Palmer Township Area Chapter 2144 meeting: 1 p.m. Entertainment by The Cracked Walnuts. Wilson Borough Community Center, 2200 Liberty St., Wilson Borough.


Nazareth vs. Easton Rovers varsity football: Kickoff is at 6 p.m. (Game was rescheduled from Friday due to storm.) Cottingham Stadium, 21 North 11th St.


Wilson Area School Board meeting: 7 p.m. William P. Tollinger Administration Building, 2040 Washington Boulevard, Wilson Borough.

Palmer Township Board of Supervisors meeting: 7 p.m. In the Palmer Library meeting room, at the Municipal Complex, 1 Weller Place (off of Newburg Road), Palmer Township.


Tuesday, November 6


Election Day! Remember to vote!
The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and all locations in the Easton area are operational and ready to go. At two locations,  inWilliams Township and at North Tenth and Bushkill streets, where power is still spotty,  the Army Corps of Engineers will have staff and backup power on site throughout the election, according to a report from Lehigh Valley Live.

While poll workers are instructed to ask for a photo ID, one is not required to cast your ballot in the election this year in Pennsylvania.

All Easton Area schools are closed due to Election Day.

The Williams Township municipal offices are open, and the site now has working phones and access to the Internet, which were restored sometime yesterday.

St. Andrew's Nursery School in Palmer Township is closed due to Election Day.

The Career Institute of Technology is closed today, and their offices are closed as well.

Williams Township Book Drive: Judith's Reading Room is holding a book drive to benefit military troops and veterans at Williams Township polls. New or gently used books will be distributed overseas and to veterans centers here, as well as establishing children's libraries locally. Bring a bag of books when you come to vote!


Wednesday, November 7


The Career Institute of Technology now has power and will open today.

AAA of Northampton County now has power and will be open today.
