Police Investigating 'Suspicious' People Knocking on Wilson Doors
In two separarate incidents Tuesday, police say residents reported suspicious people knocking on Wilson residents' doors with dubious pretenses for requesting access.
An 89-year-old resident in the 800 block of Miller Street told police a man came to his residence claiming to be a state water inspector and that the water at the residence was contaminated. The man said he needed to come into the home to check the situation, police said.
The resident apparently allowed him inside, where the man then reportedly turned on the faucets on the first floor of the home, and then went to the basement, where he also turned on the faucets and appeared to be testing the water. After that, he left some of the faucets on and said he'd be return in half an hour but never returned, police said.
The resident described the "water inspector" to police as being a Hispanic male in his mid-30s, wearing dark pants and a dark shirt. He spoke broken English and carried a photo identification that said "State Inspector" on it, police said.
Nothing has yet been discovered missing from the home, police said.
Later in the day, residents at a home in the 2200 block of Ferry Street reported to police that at about 8 p.m. two men knocked on the door claiming to be from the utility company UGI and asked to see the resident's gas bill so they could save them money. The residents were suspicious of the claim and told them to leave, police said.
The men were both described as being black with Jamaican accents. They were reportedly wearing yellow hats and had UGI tags hanging from their necks, police said, adding that UGI confirmed the men are not company employees.
"Residents are reminded that they can call the utility companies to verify the identity of any workers, and they can also call for police if the situation appears suspicious," the Wilson Police Department said in the press release about the incidents.
They added that if anyone has information about the incidents or similar ones, to please call Detective Christian Meehan at 610-258-8542.
