Easton's Historic District Commission (HDC) unanimously approved an application from Sprint to upgrade their cellular antenna array that sits on the roof of the Alpha Building on Monday evening.
An engineer for the project confirmed that the new equipment will upgrade the local area's current 3G service to 4G LTE.
But while the new equipment will be installed "as soon as possible", the improvement won't be instant, company officials said.
The plan is that the new antenna and its equipment cabinet will be installed alongside the old one, and both will work simultaneously until technicians are sure that the new array works reliably and properly. After that, the current 3G equipment will be removed.
Officials said they expect the process of moving to the faster speed service will take about six months.
Sprint is one of a number of companies that rents roof space for celluar antennas and related equipment on the Alpha Building, a set up which provides tens of thousands of dollars in annual collectively paid to the city for the leasing privilege.
During dicussion, one member of the HDC inquired which celluar companies have similar agreements with the city.
"Who isn't on the roof?" replied Easton City Planning Director Becky Bradley.
